Nineteen new members were initiated in November, just in time for all the holiday events both charitable and social. New Elks from Mission Viejo are: James Shroeder, Harold Steele, Helen Akesson, Monty Langes, Alejandro Hernandez, John Hurley, and Erik Fisher. Other new members are: David Harrison, Robert Aguilar, and Alice King of Anaheim, Dan Coyal of Rancho Santa Margarita, Tim Herren of Trabuco Canyn, Suzan Zachary of Corona Del Mar, Tammy Ware of Laguna Niguel, Linda Wright of Aliso Viejo, Mark Ryan of Laguna Hills, Linda Snell of Capo Beach, John Gee of Laguna Woods, and Jon Theurich of Lake Forest. Exalted Ruler Mike Long spoke to the new members about the many events on tap saying, "It's that time of year when you can see our Lodge and it's members at their very finest, and I invite you to participate in as many of these functions as your time will allow. You will find it a wonderful way to get to know the Lodge members as well as some of the nicest people we serve in the community."

Veterans Day BBQ
By Jerrie Muir / photo by Mike Klinger
The Mission Viejo Saddleback Valley Elks Lodge No. 2444 conducted a Veterans Day Recognition and BBQ on Saturday, November 11, 2017.  This event brought together young and old veterans, including U.S. Navy Veteran Wade Kemerer, who is 92 years old!  Gloria LeCouvre, PER, led the set-up of a flag and military memorabilia display, which honored all branches of the military.  A volunteer team of 13 Elks and Elks Supporters, led by Kitchen Manager Pam Mackey, and Jerrie Muir, Chair, Veteran’s Committee, served 121 meals to hungry veterans, their families, and supporters, which included hamburgers, bratwurst, salad, fries, coleslaw, potato salad, and an extensive desert menu. Music was provided by Doug Houston and late in the afternoon, Elks were still seen dancing to Doug’s great tunes and professional singing. The BBQ also raised funds for the Elks Veteran’s Committee which will be used to support veterans in need this upcoming holiday season.

Elks Host Jarhead Jamboree
By Mike Klinger
At the Elks Lodge Friday night dinner, the Mission Viejo Saddleback Valley Elks 2444 hosted a special group of Veterans and their annual event. The Jarhead Jamboree is an informal group of Marines who gather each year on November 10 to celebrate the birthday of the United States Marine Corps. This is the 242 Marine Corps birthday and the 18th Annual Jarhead Jamboree. Marines Thom Spratt, the founding member of the Jarhead Jamboree and Elks’ Lodge Scouting Chairman, organized the event and led the Marines, members and guests with an inspiring message on the USMC birthday that made everyone in the lodge feel proud to be an American. Piper, Greg Elliott, dressed in authentic Piper attire played the Marine Hymn and God Bless American on the bagpipes. The sweet sound of the “pipes” rang thru the lodge with everyone in silence.
