Say Hello to Elk of the Month Les Stipek
Congratulations to Les Stipek. He is our October Elk of the Month. Les was initiated into the B.P.O.E. May of 2014. Even before he was initiated, Les was volunteering for Bingo. Les and his Wife Maggie (also a member) have an 8 year old granddaughter with special needs. This was their motivation to get involved in charity.

Gritober is Upon Us
October is ENF Month, and this year, we’ll be celebrating grit. Grit is the will to persevere in the face of long odds. Educators have turned it into an acronym: G for guts or growth, R for resilience, I for integrity, and T for tenacity.

The grit movement started a few years ago when psychologist Angela Duckworth studied people in challenging situations, including National Spelling Bee participants, rookie teachers in tough neighborhoods, and West Point cadets.

Incredible Abandoned Elks Building in Pennsylvania

The Elks are one of the oldest social clubs in the country, founded in 1868. One of the earlier lodges for its members was built in 1916 in New Castle, Pennsylvania and stood for almost 100 years.
Abandoned America photographer Matthew Christopher got these incredible shots of the interior of New Castle Elks Lodge in 2011, less than a month before the building was demolished. Though he came across the site accidentally, it’s almost as if fate drove him to capture the building’s glory before its destruction.

Purple Pig Contributors Honored

At a recent weekly lodge meeting, the Mission Viejo Saddleback Valley Elks 2444 honored two special ladies, Tiler and Purple Pig Chairman, Diana Wilson, (left) and Betty Kolstoe for their contributions to the CHEA Purple Pig Major Project. Exalted Ruler, Camacho Alvarez stated, “Betty, you are one of only four members in our lodge that has contributed $1,000 to the Purple Pig Major Project and I present you with the Millennium Club Award. And being a new member just initiated in July, this has special meaning to our lodge and the major project. Thank you.” ER Alvarez then congratulated Wilson for her contribution and presented a Century Club Award for her $100 donation and her continued support for the major project as Lodge Chairman.
